SYRACUSE – A Longtime family friend was killed in a crash early Monday that involved two other vehicles on Onondaga Lake, police said.
Michael Regan, 38, was killed around 2:30 a.m. in the crash on the north end of Onondaga Lake, near Schuylerville Road and Tobyhanna Drive.
Robert Schuster, 26, also of East Syracuse, was taken to Upstate University Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to police.
The driver of the second vehicle, Greg Noland, 40, of Utica, was transported to Upstate University Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
Regan was a longtime family friend of Schuster, who lives in East Syracuse, and of Noland, who lives in Utica, according to police and family members.
Regan was a college graduate from Onondaga Community College and had worked in the Syracuse area for more than a decade, according to a Facebook page run by his family.
Regan was also a member of United States Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign in Syracuse and an environmental advocate for the Democratic Party.
He served as a captain in the Marine Corps and had served in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to the Sanders campaign.
Regan’s cousin and fellow Marine, Leo Regan, said Regan had been injured in a car accident in 2011 but continued to volunteer with the Sanders campaign in Syracuse.
Leo Regan said his cousin was the only family member in the area when he was killed.
The crash was reported to police at 2:30 a.m. Monday, and at least seven other vehicles were involved in the accident, according to Lt. Tim Berrios.
No charges had been filed as of Monday morning, Berrios said.
